A variety of mythologies portray Fate as a woman, or several women, who spin, measure, and cut thread.  Living with a partner who spins, and learning to spin myself, and thinking a bit of that parable about the footprints on the beach, put me in mind of the idea of Fate as a spinner as a source of comfort and encouragement.
