The key turning point that sets off most of the action of the Silmarillion is the terrible oath sworn by the Elf Fëanor and his sons to avenge Morgoth's theft of the Silmarils, magical gems containing some of the first light of creation.

This song has been updated to remove uses of the word "black" as a metonym for "evil".

I recall, in the days of old,
Two bright trees shining silver and gold;
From their dew, our Queen set the sky with stars,
But mine will shine brighter by far!

Master Smith, you have taught me well,
And these are the height of my art;
The fairest jewels of which tales will tell,
Of all things the most dear to my heart.

Under cloak of night came the murd'ring thief,
While we were all feasting above;
Fell the Spider's kiss, but the worst is this:
He took every last thing that I loved!

Two dead trees!  Three bright jewels!
One grim Foe, ever cunning and cruel;
If he thinks he's won, then he's one dim fool!
I'll be after him to get back what's mine,
As long as the Silmarils shine!

I would not unmake what my hands have wrought,
Not even to save the Two Trees;
But you ask in vain, for I have them not --
Must I wait while my Enemy flees?

He has spilled our blood, he has quenched our light,
Taken all that we ever held fair;
I and all my kin will recall his sin,
And we will have vengeance, I swear!

For our father's blood, and the three bright jewels!
So our one grim Foe, be he ever so cruel,
Better watch his back, if the world he'd rule;
For we've sworn to fight to get back our own,
As long as there's light in the stones!

So we leave this land, where the Light once shone,
And return to the Middling Earth;
And we swear to do all that must be done
To recover our treasure and worth!

And we shall not rest 'til the world is ours,
And the Silmarils back in our hands;
Bringing battle bold to the hand that holds them,
As long as our Enemy stands!

So we bind our fates to the three bright jewels!
And we come with war and with vengeance cruel
Against Elf or Power or mortal fool
Who should keep from us what is rightly ours,
'Til the end of the shining stars!
